fomo app vs Coinbase: which one for new tokens?

fomo app vs Coinbase is not one comparison, it is three. Coinbase is three separate products: the custodial Coinbase app, the self-custody Coinbase Wallet, and DEX trading inside the main app through the Launches tab. Which one you mean changes the answer completely. fomo, by contrast, is a single phone app with one balance across six chains. Short version: Coinbase suits large caps and a brand your bank recognises, fomo suits new Solana and Base tokens bought from a phone.

Memecoin trading is high-risk speculation, not investing. Most people who do it lose money, on fomo and through Coinbase alike, and nothing on this page is financial advice.

Every Coinbase figure below comes from Coinbase’s own blog or help pages, read on 11 October 2026, with the links in the sources list. Fees change, fee tiers change, and the confirm screen in front of you is the only number that counts.

Coinbase is three products, not one

The Coinbase app is the custodial exchange. Coinbase holds the keys. You buy BTC, ETH, SOL and whatever else has been listed centrally, and the coins sit in Coinbase’s custody until you move them.

Coinbase Wallet is the self-custody app. It was renamed Base App in July 2025, then renamed back to Coinbase Wallet on 10 September 2026 after the social experiment fell short, according to The Block. Balances were not affected by the rename. Plenty of guides, and some of Coinbase’s own help text, still have not caught up.

DEX trading inside the main app, the Launches tab, arrived in mid-2026. It needs a self-custody wallet attached. A plain custodial Coinbase account cannot use it.

So when someone asks whether fomo is better than Coinbase, the honest first question is which Coinbase. fomo has no equivalent split: one account, self-custody via Privy, no seed phrase, one balance across Solana, Base, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Monad and Robinhood Chain. What the fomo app actually is covers that model in full.

There is no single Coinbase fee for a simple buy

This is the part worth saying out loud, because almost nobody says it. For a simple buy or sell in the main Coinbase app, Coinbase publishes no fixed fee and no fixed spread. Its pricing and fees disclosures say a spread is included in the quoted price and that fees are calculated at the time you place the order, varying by payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset. The number appears in the trade preview and nowhere else.

For DEX trades inside the main app, the same page says Coinbase may add a separate service fee that partly covers network costs, and may keep the excess. No percentage is published, and Coinbase One’s zero-fee benefit does not cover it.

That means any article giving you one tidy percentage for “the Coinbase fee” on a simple buy, or a table of flat dollar charges by order size, is printing something Coinbase does not publish. There are plenty of those. Treat the absence of a number as the finding, not as a gap to fill.

fomo is easier to pin down, though not by much: about 0.45% per spot trade with gas included, per this site’s research, where fomo’s own wording is only that the fee is competitive with gas included and no hidden spreads. The fomo app fees page goes through what is and is not included.

Coinbase Advanced: the one place real percentages exist

Coinbase Advanced is the pro order-book interface, and it is the only part of Coinbase with a published fee schedule. On 16 September 2026 Coinbase lowered it:

Coinbase Advanced entry tierMakerTaker
United States0.50%0.90%
EU and UK0.25%0.50%
Brazil, India and other international0.09%0.10%

The same post moved the first volume tier down to $10,000 of 30-day volume from $25,000, and started counting spot and derivatives volume together. At the top of the ladder, VIP8, fees go as low as 0 basis points maker and 2 basis points taker.

A US taker on the entry tier therefore pays 0.90% a side on Advanced, where fomo charges about 0.45%. A US maker pays 0.50%, which is close to fomo. Outside the US the international tiers beat fomo comfortably. None of this applies to new memecoins, because Advanced only trades what Coinbase has listed.

Coinbase Wallet swaps: up to 1%, plus a leftover sentence

For self-custody swaps, Coinbase’s help page Swap using a DEX is specific. The fee is up to 1% on swaps, reflected in the amount of the destination token you receive. Aggregators that route the swap may charge their own fee on top, and network fees are separate again.

The detail that tells you how recently anyone checked: that page still says “Base charges a fee”. It is a leftover from the year the app was called Base App. Small thing, but it is the kind of thing worth noticing before you trust a help centre on the exact number.

Compared with fomo, a Coinbase Wallet swap can cost up to 1% of the trade plus network gas you pay yourself, against fomo’s roughly 0.45% with gas folded in. The full fee comparison runs that as a round trip across four apps, which is the only way the numbers mean anything.

The Coinbase Wallet network list, per Coinbase’s help pages, is Arbitrum, Avalanche C-Chain, Base, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Monad, Optimism, Polygon, Robinhood Chain, Solana and Zora. Broader than fomo on paper, with a catch covered two sections down.

Memecoin access is where they actually split

Coinbase’s central listings are restrictive. By early 2026 only a handful of Base memecoins had been listed at all, so the main app is not where a new token shows up on day one.

The Launches tab changed that for some users. In-app DEX trading opened to US users with New York excluded, per CoinDesk. Whether New York has since been added is not confirmed by anything we could find, so if you are there, check your own account rather than a table. Solana DEX trading routes through Jupiter, announced in December 2025. Coinbase also bought Vector, a Solana memecoin social trading app built by the Tensor team, in November 2025, completed it in December and sunset the apps.

fomo’s whole product is that discovery problem: a feed of what other traders are buying, a leaderboard, trader write-ups and a buy button on the same screen. Trading Solana meme coins on fomo covers how that works day to day.

The passkey problem: no Solana at all

This is the sharpest practical difference, and it catches people after they have already onboarded. Coinbase Wallet’s passkey smart wallets are EVM only. Solana and Bitcoin require an email, social login or recovery-phrase wallet instead, per Coinbase’s own help page.

Read that again if you are planning to trade Solana tokens. A user who signs up with a passkey, the smoothest onboarding Coinbase offers, cannot hold a Solana token in that wallet. Not “pays more”, not “needs an extra step”. Cannot. Since most new memecoins launch on Solana, that single design choice decides the comparison for a lot of people.

fomo has no equivalent gap. One balance covers Solana and Base with no bridging and no per-chain wallet, which is the main thing you are paying the fee for. Funding runs through Apple Pay and the other methods on the deposit guide.

Who each one suits

Coinbase if you want large caps, a custodial account with a recovery route, a company your bank will not flag, and no interest in tokens that launched this morning. Advanced if you trade enough volume for the tiers to matter, especially outside the US.

fomo if you are buying new Solana and Base tokens from a phone, want gas handled for you, and want the feed and leaderboard as part of the product. The trade-off is self-custody, which means nobody can recover your account for you, and a per-trade fee above a bare wallet swap.

Plenty of people run both: Coinbase as the fiat door and the place long-term holdings sit, fomo for the speculative end. If that is you, read is the fomo app legit for the custody questions and run a realistic trade through the memecoin profit calculator first. On a thin pool, slippage will cost you more than any fee argued over on this page. We run the same comparison against two tools built for memecoins rather than for everything: fomo vs Phantom and fomo vs Photon.

Questions people ask

Is the fomo app cheaper than Coinbase?

For a simple buy there is no way to answer that, because Coinbase does not publish a fee or spread for simple buys. Against Coinbase Advanced in the US, fomo's roughly 0.45% per side sits between the 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker entry tier that Coinbase published on 16 September 2026. Against a Coinbase Wallet swap at up to 1%, fomo is usually cheaper per trade.

What does Coinbase charge to buy a memecoin?

Coinbase does not say. For DEX trades inside the main app it states only that it may add a service fee that partly covers network costs and may keep the difference, with no percentage given. In Coinbase Wallet the swap fee is up to 1%, taken out of the token you receive. The trade preview is the only place the real number appears.

Can Coinbase Wallet hold Solana tokens?

Only some Coinbase Wallet accounts can. Coinbase's help pages say passkey smart wallets are EVM only, so Solana and Bitcoin need an email, social or recovery-phrase wallet instead. If you onboarded with a passkey you cannot hold a Solana token at all, which rules out most new memecoins.

Is Coinbase Wallet the same thing as Base App?

Same product. Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet to Base App in July 2025 and renamed it back on 10 September 2026, after the social side did not work out, per The Block. Balances were not affected. Some Coinbase help text still has not caught up.

Can I trade memecoins on Coinbase in New York?

When in-app DEX trading launched for US users, New York was excluded. Whether that has changed since is not confirmed anywhere we could find, so check inside your own account rather than trusting a comparison table, including this one.

Which is safer, fomo or Coinbase?

Different risks. Coinbase's custodial app holds your keys, is a US public company and is the more conventional choice. fomo is self-custodial through Privy with no seed phrase, so there is no company to ask for your coins back. Neither protects you from buying a worthless token, which is the risk that actually costs people money.
